Our Journey

Ngāti Tama has a rich and storied history spanning centuries. Our people have maintained a deep connection to the lands of Te Tau Ihu since our earliest ancestors arrived in the region.

Through periods of migration, settlement, and adaptation, Ngāti Tama has remained a resilient and vibrant iwi, preserving our customs, language, and traditions for future generations.

Early Settlement

Ngāti Tama ancestors establish presence in Te Tau Ihu, developing deep relationships with the land and sea.

1820s–1840s

Migration Period

Through migrations and alliances, Ngāti Tama consolidates its position in the northern South Island.

Treaty of Waitangi

Te Tiriti o Waitangi is signed, beginning a new chapter in the relationship between iwi and the Crown.

Land Losses

Successive government policies result in significant loss of Ngāti Tama lands and resources.

Treaty Settlement

Ngāti Tama achieves a Treaty settlement, providing a foundation for cultural and economic restoration.
